This luxurious steam room bathroom in Much Hadham was designed as a private retreat, combining Italian steam technology with bespoke architectural detailing. Pearlescent mosaics, sculptural sanitaryware were meticulously planned to withstand the demands of heat, mositure and daily life.
THE Bathroom DESIGN BRIEF
Our clients wanted to transform their family bathroom into a luxurious steam room retreat where they could unwind together with a glass of wine at the end of the week.
Wellness played an important role in their lifestyle, so incorporating a dedicated steam room felt like a natural and considered addition to the property. The brief was to create a calming, restorative bathroom that offered the comfort of a private spa while remaining practical for everyday family routines.
The main design challenges
The bathroom presented several technical challenges, beginning with its angled walls and vaulted ceiling. Surveying the room accurately was essential, as every angle needed to be captured precisely before the new layout and steam enclosure could be developed.
A further complication was the main soil pipe serving the adjoining ensuite. It ran through the upper section of the floor structure before exiting the building and could not be lowered beneath the subfloor without affecting the stepped landing and neighbouring bathrooms. The pipe therefore had to remain within the room and be carefully incorporated into the design.
To improve the usable floor area, the first step leading into the bathroom was removed. The existing entrance door also opened inwards and would have obstructed the proposed toilet position, so it was replaced with a pocket door. This allowed the new arrangement to work without compromising the surrounding details.
The original shower was removed and the toilet relocated. An existing bulkhead initially appeared to offer an opportunity to create a built-in seat within the steam shower. However, after further investigation, the builder confirmed that the structure was not required and could be removed. This gave us greater freedom to refine the shower layout and make better use of the room.
MEETING THE BRIEF
At the heart of the scheme is the Effe Easy Steam Smart 45, an Italian-designed steam generator with an approximate value of £6,000. Compact yet exceptionally powerful, it was selected for its ability to deliver a complete steam experience without overwhelming the room. A discreet drawer for essential oils adds another sensory layer, transforming each use into a genuine moment of escape.
Designed specifically for installation within shower environments, the unit was carefully integrated into the wider bathroom design. Its isolator switch was positioned within the utility room downstairs, safely out of reach of the children and preventing the steam function from being operated when the adults are away.
Pearlescent mosaics were specified across the shower seating area, allowing the tiles to follow the sculpted form of the ergonomic seat. Their subtle reflective quality brings depth and movement to the enclosure while creating a refined, continuous finish.
The angle of the external wall presented a particular design challenge, influencing both the position of the enclosure and the direction of entry. The resulting opening sits at approximately 70 degrees, yet still provides comfortable access for the whole family. A bespoke shower door was manufactured to fit the aperture precisely, with a discreet tolerance of only a few millimetres to allow steam to escape gradually.
Storage and lighting were considered with equal care. A small niche was incorporated into the outer wall of the enclosure, while a second illuminated niche was formed within the shower itself. A waterproof light fitting casts a soft glow across the interior, completing the sense of calm and quiet luxury.
A Study in Refined Detail
Conventional bathroom furniture was deliberately avoided within the steam room environment, allowing the scheme to retain its clean architectural lines while eliminating materials unsuited to prolonged heat and humidity.
An Ideal Standard Refined basin, specified without tap holes, provides a generous and uninterrupted washing area. The wall-mounted tap was intentionally positioned off-centre, aligning precisely with the edge of the mirror rather than the centre of the basin. This considered detail responds to the angled ceiling, which dictated both the dimensions and placement of the mirror, turning an architectural constraint into a distinctive feature of the design.
Positioned beside the basin, a projecting towel rail provides immediate and unobstructed access while complementing the restrained arrangement of the sanitaryware.
The toilet frame and concealed cistern were expertly integrated within the wall construction, allowing the pan to appear effortlessly suspended above the floor. The result is visually light, highly refined and easier to maintain.
THE FINER CONSIDERATIONS
The walls are finished in Dubai White ceramic tiles, selected for their subtle depth, refined surface and enduring quality. Their elegant 25 × 44.3 cm format creates a calm and balanced backdrop, while the softly reflective finish responds beautifully to the room’s layered lighting.
Durable and easy to maintain, the tiles are ideally suited to the demands of a steam environment, bringing together practical and quiet luxury. Their understated tone allows the pearlescent mosaics, sculptural sanitaryware and carefully positioned brassware to command attention without overwhelming the overall composition.

Designing a steam room requires meticulous planning, as every detail must respond to prolonged heat, moisture and condensation.
The entire enclosure must be fully tanked and sealed to create a completely watertight environment. This includes the walls, floor, seating area and shower tray, with particular attention paid to junctions, corners and concealed services.
A gently sloped ceiling is essential, allowing condensation to travel towards the perimeter rather than forming droplets directly above those using the steam room. The water can then drain safely into the tanked and sealed shower tray below.
Lighting must also be selected specifically for use within a high-moisture environment. Waterproof fittings were carefully integrated to provide soft, atmospheric illumination while meeting the necessary safety requirements.
The proportions of the seating were equally important. The bench was designed to comfortably accommodate two people, while also providing sufficient depth for one person to stretch out, raise their feet and fully unwind.
Every technical decision was considered alongside the overall experience, ensuring the steam room feels calm, luxurious and effortless to use.
